The first iteration of e waste was titled “The relevance of trash.” The workshop focused on desoldering as a skill while Luming and I lectured on the production of discrete components and their use value within IC’s and larger electronics.

The second iteration of E Waste was called “E Waste 2.0” and focused on shipping, logistics, and packaging involved in the movement of electronics from one place to the next. Participants were mailed different types of E Waste as an entry point into a dialogue about classification codes and materials (raw vs reclaimed). They were asked to research and become acquainted with the objects. During the workshop, we grouped different participants based on commonalities between their objects. Some categories for grouping include: location of manufacturing, material, era or time frame of manufacturing, same shipping container, and function.

The workshop used different e waste objects as a lens to try and make sense of large infrastructures and overarching systems. The database for the objects used in the workshop can be seen below.
